    The wood grain on the
old counters was fun to do
and acrylic paint lends itself
well to getting the texture
of the grain.


This old barber chair has a
steel foot rest. The foot rest also
flips over to an upholstered
and cushioned side.
Lee's Barber Shop, Tappahannock, VA. What a wonderful experience this was! Walking through the door was like stepping back in time. It was obvious when I got there, that the barber, Robert Gaines, was not thrilled with my being there. He was very skeptical of my reason for wanting to take pictures, and he barely spoke to me as I snapped photos. I promised him I'd come back and show him the finished picture but I think he was just glad to get rid of me!

     Mr. Gaines was surprised at my return a few weeks later with completed painting in hand. His reaction was priceless! He exclaimed "Great day in the morning!" and spent a great deal of time showing the painting to patrons and pointing out all the details that I'd painted in. Mr. Gaines has been cutting hair at Lee's Barber Shop for over 50 years and has no plans of retiring.
